Passion and creativity: the pioneers of organic milk
The Rio Moreno organic farm is located in Rivalta di Reggio Emilia, in the Canossa hills area. It was purchased in 1989 by Luigi Bernar, originally from Desenzano del Garda, who fell in love with this area as soon as he arrived in the region, and was convinced of the potential and the value of Parmigiano Reggiano.
Today Luigi’s sons Paolo and Andrea help him run the business, and the whole family are carrying on the tradition with an innovative approach, a passion for what they do and the utmost respect for nature. In 2002, this motivation – plus a dose of courage necessary for what was an unconventional decision at the time – prompted the family to seek organic certification for the farm.
“Life in the open air, a love of farming, a passion for the countryside and its leisurely pace, bound up with the cycle of nature, prompted my brother Andrea and me to carry on the business our father founded, and to boost its value by turning it into an organic farm.”
In addition to the dairy cattle (86 lactating cows), Rio Moreno has 100 hectares of land on which it grows organic fodder and cereals exclusively for the needs of the farm.
Boundless enthusiasm and a dash of creativity are the hallmarks of Azienda Agricola Rio Moreno, a trailblazer in the production of organic milk for Parmigiano Reggiano. The company is currently conducting a study with a view to producing milk with a “short” protein that is much easier to digest than the traditional kind, and it is also continually seeking new cultures and cultivation techniques to adapt to climate change.
“I have an incredible love for animals! I think cows are fabulous animals. They’re designed to work in symbiosis with Man.” (Paolo Bernar)
